I live in Edinburgh, which is – for at least one month a year – swamped by visitors from all over the world. They’re here for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; the biggest arts festival in the world. Right on my doorstep! And, pleasingly for me, it’s replete with brilliant artsy filth. Here’s my list of the best shows to see.
Muse
[ Muse Tickets ]
“In a world where we learn to hate the bodies of others and fear our own, MUSE offers a chance to find them instead.”
This one-woman play combines personal drama with a life drawing session. Oh, and the one woman in question is the brilliant Cameryn Moore – which means that it’s more than likely to be an visceral, intense, and at-times hilarious experience.
Sex Ed: A Cabaret of Play
[ Sex Ed Tickets ]
“With thrilling stories, silly games, and pervy puppets, Sex Ed is the smartest, slam-bangin’-est cabaret in town.”
On the subject of cool things Cameryn Moore is involved in, there’s also Sex Ed: A Cabaret of Play. Any show the description of which involves “pervy puppets” is one you shouldn’t miss out on. This one-hour show at the Safari Lounge is a cabaret like no other.
Bubble Show for Adults Only
[ Bubble Show for Adults Only Tickets ]
“A raucous and raunchy affair with a surprising story arc full of abstractness and the slightly grotesque.”
This incredibly soapy hour-long show contains a whole host of genuinely stunning bubble tricks. And who doesn’t love bubbles? It’s high-energy, non-stop, and utterly joyful. Go see it on a rainy day when you’re in a bad mood – it’ll make you feel better almost instantly.
Ejaculation
“A documentary performance about sexuality and desires based on interviews with women from various backgrounds and countries.”
People don’t talk about female ejaculation all that much, but they should. It’s great. And it’s the subject of this one-hour, taboo-breaking show at Summerhall. If nothing else it’s wonderfully illuminating just to hear the words of other people talking about sex.
Laugh till It Hurts
[ Laugh till it Hurts Tickets ]
“Like 50 Shades of Grey, but funny on purpose. The story of one comedian’s adventure into the dark and crazy world of fetish and kink in Bristol.”
I’m always a bit leery of comedians riffing on BDSM and kink culture, but this is one show that comes from someone who’s actually part of the scene. This midnight show runs for only one short week, so catch it at the Charteris Centre while you can.
Darkness to Light
“This collection of 17 large, colour images investigates the mental baggage we all carry around and possible redemption should we look for it.”
If you’re into sploshing, this exhibition (which runs for the length of the Fringe) is a must-see. Think 100 litres of molasses, 14 nearly-naked models, and a portable shower unit. Darkness to Light is a fun, slightly sticky break from the frenetic action of the rest of the Fringe.
Blind Date
“One actor. One audience member. One blind date. A sexy French clown goes on a blind date with a willing gentleman.”
Are you the kind of person who loves overhearing people who are out on a date? Well, now you can do that in a way that’s entirely socially acceptable. Witness a first date unfolding right in front of you in this unique, always different show.
