At the time of writing, it’s early August 2023. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is happening – and if you live in Edinburgh there’s literally no way to avoid it. You might as well at least try and have a good time.
Here’s a selection of my favourite shows from the 2023 lineup – with a specific focus on queer, kinky, or just genuinely sexually provocative offerings. Enjoy!
Trash Salad
Trash Salad is a filthy, chaotic clown striptease with lettuce and humping. It’s gross and in-your-face and constantly surprising and delightful. Probably the weirdest thing you’ll see at the Fringe this year, but also maybe weirdly arousing in a way that you can’t quite explain even to yourself? Superb.
Sex Job
[ Sex Job Tickets ]
An “inside look into the life of a financial dominatrix”. However much or little you know about financial domination, this show will likely reveal something new and unexpected. Sometimes funny, sometimes a little dark, but consistently honest and interesting. Performer Lane Kwederis employs a mix of song, theatre, media and storytelling to assemble a fascinating show.
Dad, Playboy and Me – Not Your Average Slideshow
[ Dad, Playboy and Me Tickets ]
A surprisingly moving presentation on the history of the Great Gorge Playboy Club in New Jersey. AG Norton’s father father was a regular visitor (often taking along his wife and kids), and his collection of photographs taken at the establishment paint a unique portrait of a social club that’s frequently seen in a very one-dimensional manner. Norton explores not only her father’s story, but the stories of the “bunnies” who worked at the club in a nuanced and intimate hour of storytelling.
Sam See: Government Approved Sex
[ Government Approved Sex Tickets ]
During the Coronavirus pandemic, Sam See was invited by the government of Singapore (a famously uptight nation) to create a series of presentations on sex and relationships. Despite the fact that it’s still illegal to be gay in Singapore, Sam did so… and then wrote this show about it. It’s an intriguing, eye-opening and frequently hilarious hour, filled with graphs, stats, personal anecdotes and stories.
